St Mirren v Motherwell: Wilkinson wants to keep 'Well momentum going with cup run

Motherwell striker Conor Wilkinson says the Steelmen’s season could be defined by a cup run, and he hopes they can sink St Mirren on Saturday to maintain their momentum under boss Stuart Kettlewell.

A trip to Paisley awaits in the last 16 of the Viaplay Cup this afternoon, with the Fir Park side taking their strong form from last season into the new campaign.

Wilkinson opened the scoring in Sunday’s 2-1 win Premiership over Hibs to make it 12 games unbeaten in all competitions, and you have to go back to April’s defeat at home to Dundee United for the last time they tasted defeat in any match.

Former Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson and his Saints stand between them and a place in the quarter-finals.

But Wilkinson says the club are determined to reach the last eight now Motherwell’s new-look front line has found its feet, with Wilkinson and fellow strikers Theo Bair and Mika Biereth all off the mark early on.

The 28-year-old, who signed a two-year deal in the summer, said: “Some seasons are defined by cup runs and if you do well in these competitions, it can keep your season going as well.

“If you keep winning, you can get some good draws, keep that momentum going and take it into the league as well.

“So that’s what we want to do at St Mirren.

“We’ve got to work relentlessly on the training pitch and fingers crossed, now that we’ve got our first win in the league this season, we can take that forward.

“It has been tough so far because none of us have played together before and I’m chasing my pre-season.

“But I’m feeling strong now, I feel fit, so I’m dying for the games to come thick and fast and I want to get stuck into them.
