Spurs eye third deadline day signing in "unbelievable" dynamo, Conte really needs him - opinion

Tottenham Hotspur could make a late January deadline day transfer move for Djed Spence…

That’s according to The Northern Echo’s Chief Sports Writer Scott Wilson, who delivered a fresh update on the Lilywhites’ interest in the Middlesbrough right wing-back, who is currently on loan to Nottingham Forest.

“Boro are braced for a possible Djed Spence offer from either Arsenal or Spurs. If the price was right, they’d sell,” he revealed on Twitter.

In an accompanying article, he suggests that the two north London sides are indeed interested in signing the 21-year-old defender.

Spurs are closing in on the arrival of Juventus duo Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski, who are on the verge of being announced, so Spence would be their third signing of the day, if a move comes to fruition.

This wouldn’t come as much of a surprise as it is a position that manager Antonio Conte is thought to be desperately seeking this month – as per The Times, he is said to have little faith in Emerson Royal, signed by his predecessor Nuno Santo in the summer and Jose Mourinho flop Matt Doherty.

The Italian head coach isn’t convinced by their ability in the final third, where his wing-backs need to thrive in order to provide the service to the likes of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son upfront.

Spence may lack experience in the top-flight but he displayed his “unbelievable” credentials during Forest’s FA Cup win over the Gunners earlier this month.
