Sold for £30m, now worth 61% less: Everton hit the jackpot over "nasty" £99k-p/w dud - opinion

Everton have not been averse to selling players to other clubs for significant transfer fees in the past, such as Lucas Digne, Romelu Lukaku and John Stones to name a few.

One player who made the move away from Goodison Park in recent years for a rather hefty transfer fee is Idrissa Gueye, who joined Paris Saint-Germain back in 2019 in a deal worth £30m.

The Merseyside club secured the Senegal midfielder’s signature in 2016 from Aston Villa for just £7.1m. In his three years at Goodison Park, the 32-year-old racked up 108 appearances across all competitions, chipping in with four goals and five assists along the way.

Since making the move to France, the former Toffees player, who is currently picking up £99k-per-week according to Salary Sport, has almost equalled the number of appearances he made for Everton, with 101 games in a PSG shirt under his belt, plus seven goals and five assists in that time.

Shortly before signing for the Ligue 1 leaders, Gueye’s market value was listed as £22.5m, whereas it now stands at £11.7 according to Transfermarkt, which is a decrease of 61% from the £30m that Everton reaped from selling him three years ago.

Having been slammed by Owen Hargreaves for his “nasty” tackle which saw him sent off for PSG in their semi-final first leg Champions League clash against Manchester City last season, the midfielder has shown in the past that he can be a bit reckless and a liability on the pitch, having picked up four red cards throughout his club career.

Taking all this into account, it’s safe to say that Everton hit the jackpot by selling Gueye when they did, especially considering the massive profit that they made on him.
