Sheffield Wednesday's surprise clear out has left Darren Moore with clear transfer priorities

The Sheffield Wednesday rebuild is officially under way. Thoughts have already turned to the summer transfer window and the club's retained list has thrown up a few surprises.

Sam Hutchinson and Saido Berahino, two valuable members of the first-team squad in their push for promotion during the 2021/22 season, are heading for the exit door. Given Hutchinson started 31 times across all competitions, his impending departure is perhaps the biggest shock. The former Chelsea man made a big impact after returning from injury in the New Year.

After a slow start to his Wednesday career, Berahino found his feet in the second half of the campaign. Only Lee Gregory (22) and Barry Bannan (21) directly contributed to more goals than Berahino (12) in the Owls' fourth-placed finish.

Moore has once again shown his ruthless streak by cutting ties with three experienced pros in Dunkley, Hutchinson and Berahino. Releasing the trio suggests Moore plans on going in a different direction and may look to add more youth and pace to the squad. All will be revealed when the transfer window reopens next month.

Some eyebrows were raised over Wednesday offering Joe Wildsmith a new deal. It was thought Wildsmith would be part of the end-of-season cull. If Wildsmith agrees to prolong his Owls stay, it might mean Wednesday are not in the market for a new goalkeeper. Moore has already indicated that he will assess Cameron Dawson when the players report back for pre-season training next month.

Talks remain ongoing with Jack Hunt, Massimo Luongo and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing. It would be a huge boost if they all stayed put, particularly Luongo.
