Sheffield Wednesday's away support top of the charts for 2021/22 season following play-off heartache

Sheffield Wednesday have hit the front, recording the highest average away attendance in League One for the 21/22 campaign.

The Owls edged ahead of play-off rivals Sunderland who eliminated Darren Moore's side at Hillsborough just last week, by a total of 21 fans.

Coming in at a whopping 2464 as the season's average, Wednesday have been backed up and down the country following their return to the third tier.

And what makes the feat even more so impressive, is that the Owls travelling contingent have eclipsed on average more away supporters than any club in the Championship.

Middlesborough were the division's highest with 2260, showing just how well backed Darren Moore's men have been throughout the whole campaign.

With a return to the second tier again no doubt still the imminent aim heading into next season, Wednesday will bid to flush away any lingering heartache when the 22/23 campaign rolls around.

Speaking on the support shown, as the Owls sold out the away end at Bolton Wanderers back in April, manager Moore said : “It doesn’t surprise me with the Wednesday fans because they have been excellent all season.

“They have been great on the road and travelled in their numbers. To have 5,000 plus fans down there is excellent for us. With the home form that we have shown, we have got to try and keep that momentum going on the road. They (Bolton and MK Dons) will be different games and we will prepare for Bolton as best as we can."
