Sheffield Wednesday join Portsmouth in pursuit of Swansea deal

Sheffield Wednesday have joined Portsmouth in the pursuit of Swansea City striker Kyle Joseph, according to a report from Wales Online. 

Earlier this month, reports claimed that the 20-year-old was among a trio of Swans players that were on Pompey’s list of summer transfer targets.

According to Wales Online, they’ve now been joined by Wednesday with the Yorkshire club exploring the option of signing the young striker.

It is said that Swansea are open to offers for Joseph, who has three years left on his contract in South Wales and is currently partaking in pre-season with the rest of Russell Martin’s squad.

The Scotland U21 forward came through the Wigan Athletic academy but was snapped up by the Swans for a six-figure sum in July 2021.

He spent the first half of last season on loan with Cheltenham Town in League One, scoring four times and providing two assists in 22 appearances, but was recalled in January and made 10 appearances under Martin – all from the bench.

The Verdict

It seems Darren Moore is still looking at more attacking reinforcements – with Michael Smith arriving from Rotherham United and negotiations underway over a deal for Hull City’s Mallik Wilks.

Joseph is a player with big potential and showed glimpses of what he can do at Cheltenham last season, which suggests that he could be a useful option to have in League One.

He’d offer something different from the physical Smith and out-and-out number nine Lee Gregory, which is likely what appeals to Moore.

Whether Wednesday will pursue a permanent or loan deal remains to be seen but reports have indicated that Pompey can only afford the latter, which would seem to give the Owls an advantage.

Even so, it may not be cheap to buy the forward from the Swans
