Sheffield Wednesday confirm retained list with Sam Hutchinson among three players to be released

Sheffield Wednesday have today published their released and retained list following the climax of the 2021/22 season. The headline news is defender Sam Hutchinson will leave the League One club at the end of his contract this summer.

The 32-year-old, who can also operate in midfield, has made over 200 appearances across two spells for Wednesday. His final Owls outing ended in disappointment, with Hutchinson taken off after suffering concussion in the second leg of their play-off semi-final loss to Sunderland.

Centre-back Chey Dunkley and striker Saido Berahino will also depart at the end of June. A raft of injury problems have curtailed Dunkley's involvement throughout his two year spell at the club while Berahino contributed eight goals and four assists from 29 league matches this term.

Fresh terms have been offered to goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith, defender Jack Hunt, midfielder Massimo Luongo and forward Nathaniel Mendez-Laing. Wednesday have also triggered an option to retain Marvin Johnson.

Loanees Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Lewis Gibson, Jordan Storey, Harlee Dean, Olamide Shodipo, Florian Kamberi and Tyreece John-Jules have all returned to their parent clubs.

A Wednesday statement read: "Saido Berahino, Chey Dunkley and Sam Hutchinson will be released upon the expiry of their current contracts, while the club have exercised an option to retain Marvin Johnson.
