Sheffield Wednesday set sights on former Sheffield United and Blackpool defender

Sheffield Wednesday are interested in signing centre-back Ben Heneghan, Yorkshire Live understands. It is believed Heneghan is on the Owls' shortlist of defensive targets as Darren Moore looks to rebuild his depleted team going into next season.

Heneghan was a first-team regular at AFC Wimbledon last season. The 28-year-old only missed five League One matches as the Dons suffered relegation to the fourth tier.

But Wimbledon have already confirmed Heneghan is to be released when his present contract expires at the end of this month. Speaking to London News Online, Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson said: “The way I understand it the lad was keen to move on and will probably have options at a higher level and that’s something he wanted to explore.

“He has been a good servant and the club wanted to do the right thing by him as well.”

Manchester-born Heneghan, who started his career at Everton, joined the Dons in November 2020 following his release by Sheffield United. He made 71 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals.

Heneghan only played once for the Blades and spent two seasons out on loan at Blackpool. His previous clubs also include Chester and Motherwell.

Wednesday's defence is in need of major surgery after their vast loan cohort returned to their parent clubs. Manager Darren Moore has a small pool of players to choose from in central defence after losing the services of Harlee Dean, Jordan Storey and Lewis Gibson. He also opted to let Sam Hutchinson and Chey Dunkley go as part of his end-of-season cull.

It is understood the Owls still retain an interest in Dean. The 30-year-old has been frozen out at Birmingham City and will be allowed to leave St Andrew's this summer.
