Scotland vs Germany referee got slaughtered by Rio Ferdinand and Thomas Tuchel in Champions League

Clement Turpin will appear on the grand stage of Euro 2024 for Scotland's clash against Germany - just over a year after being slammed by Rio Ferdinand and Thomas Tuchel.

The French referee will take charge of the opening game of the tournament on Friday (June 14) that will see the Tartan Army take on the three-time European champions in their own backyard.

Despite his reputation as one of the continent's best officials, he endured his fair share of criticism during Bayern Munich's Champions League quarter-final battle against Manchester City in April 2023.

The 42-year-old found himself being hammered post-game by Rio Ferdinand and then-Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel for his chaos-filled controversial first-half showing, that began with him turning up late for kick-off. He then proceeded to brandish an initial red card to Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano before rescinding the sending off after Erling Haaland was found to be offside.

The theme of mayhem continued for the remainder of the first-half as Turpin showed five yellow cards to on-field players, awarded Pep Guardiola's side a penalty, while booking Tuchel for his persistent protests which eventually turned into a sending off as the game went on.

Ferdinand was highly critical of Turpin on BT Sport as the Manchester United legend said: "I've not liked the ref today, not my cup of tea. He wants it to be more about him than the game."

Tuchel was particularly scathing of the referee as his side were eventually bounced out of the competition by an aggregate scoreline of 4-1 as the German remarked: "Two things couldn't keep up with the level: the pitch wasn't in a good condition and also the referee unfortunately was grade E."

Turpin will meet some of those same Bayern players
