Jeremie Frimpong chuckles at unspoken Celtic question as Leverkusen star has message for fans

Jeremie Frimpong got a kick out of reminiscing with his former Celtic teammates at last week’s reunion in Amsterdam.

And the former Hoops hero is convinced the good times will continue to roll at his old club with Callum McGregor back in business. Dutch ace Frimpong squared up with a few of his old pals in last week’s 4-0 friendly win against Scotland. The full back – now starring for Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga – was thrilled to relive his trophy success at Celts. But he reckons the return of McGregor, who missed the trip to the Netherlands, will ensure more silverware this season.

Frimpong said: “It was great to see some familiar faces. It was nice to speak to Ryan Christie, Craig Gordon, Tony Ralston and Greg Taylor. It was nice to talk about the old times and the success we had. I know a few of them have left the club as well, but some are still there. I still look to see how they’re doing and I believe they can come strong for a successful end to the season.

"Guys like Callum are still there. When I was at the club we had Scott Brown as our leader. But Callum was right up there with him. We had a few big players in that dressing room and they were an inspiration to me. I was new to it all and it was great to see how professional they were. They took me in, gave me advice – they were excellent, on and off the pitch.”

Frimpong wasn’t surprised to see McGregor chucked the captain’s armband – because the midfielder was the obvious successor to Brown. The Dutch star said: “I knew Callum would be the captain after Scott. Everyone knew it. I think it was pretty obvious as he has all the attributes you want in a captain. Not like me! I could never be the captain!

“But Callum is fantastic on and off the pitch.
