Scot Gemmill hails super Scotland young team as U21s defy injury bug to stun Belgium on their own patch
Scot Gemmill hailed his Scotland U21s stars as they secured a famous win away at Belgium.
Goals from Leeds United defender Jeremiah Mullen and Dundee midfielder Lyall Cameron were enough to seal a 2-0 success. The Belgian had won their previous three games in the group without conceding a goal. Now Scotland have won their last three games in their Euro 2025 group against Hungary, Malta and Belgium to put the frustration of an opening day defeat in pain behind them.
Sitting second in the group ahead of Tuesday's journey to Budapest, Gemmill said: "It is a fantastic result because we can agree on the fact that Belgium are a top team. I'm obviously delighted for the players. Of course, it was real backs to the walls but it shows another side to the players and it shows we are working with the right players because they were willing to do that.
"It showed they had that kind of performance in them. If you look back at some of the previous generations who went away to Croatia and the Netherlands and won, I am delighted that this generation have achieved such a big result at a top, top nation like Belgium.
"However, we need to put it to good use and do it again against Hungary. It was a very good defensive performance and I am delighted for the players who showed real character and personality.
"I felt the level of performance we put on in Spain was great and we were all so disappointed to concede a late goal there. But it's all about recovering and the players need to go again on Tuesday and hopefully we can get some more players too because we are struggling badly with injuries."
Scotland had already suffered injury withdrawals with Jude Smith, Emilio Lawrence, Tommy Conway, Max Johnston and Ben McPherson all missing out
