Schmeichel future, Sanchez links explained, Iversen decision – Leicester goalkeepers analysed

For the past 11 years, Leicester City have had the same number one. For the past four years, City have had the same goalkeeping trio. Going into the new season, should there be a repeat or is it time for a change?

Certainly, there are more questions concerning Kasper Schmeichel’s future now than there have been at any point in his time at the club. They stem from both things the captain has said, as well as City’s selection and scouting.

Having indicated in the past that he wanted to play in the Champions League again before he retired, Schmeichel then said at the start of this year that he may look to “try somewhere else” rather than finish his career at the King Power Stadium. But he has one year remaining on his contract at City, and his end-of-season message – predicting "better things to come next season for us" – indicated he plans to see that out.

Of course, his future at City is not wholly dependent on what he wants to do. The club may have thoughts as well, and while Brendan Rodgers has publicly said he thinks Schmeichel will be here next season, it is understood that City have been looking at the goalkeeper market and sniffing around for possible future deals.

There was a change between the sticks too at the end of this past season when Schmeichel missed a Premier League game for the first time in four years as Rodgers gave Danny Ward his league debut for the club. The manager did not think it was right that Ward, described by Rodgers as his ‘other number one’, had had to wait so long for an opportunity, and so brought him in “for the health of the group”.
