Leicester City man suffers injury worry on international duty

Leicester City’s Danny Ward has suffered an injury worry while on international duty with Wales after being substituted vs the Netherlands on Wednesday.

The goalkeeper was named in the starting lineup for Wales’ 2-1 Nations League defeat, but was taken off at half time due to a knee injury. He was replaced by Sheffield United stopper Adam Davies.

Ward was forced to watch from the bench as Wales booked their place in their first World Cup in 64 years against Ukraine as Wayne Hennessey was preferred. But injury to Hennessey meant that Ward got his chance in goal against the Netherlands.

After being substituted at half time, Wales boss Rob Page revealed that the City man was also struggling with injury. "Wayne (Hennessey) was down to play today but I found out at lunchtime he has a knock," he told the BBC . “Ward has had to come off at half-time injured. When you have two or three injuries in key areas, it has an impact,”

"Danny has had a slight issue with his knee, it has flared up at half-time and he couldn't continue so that was forced on us."

Ward had some time out of the squad this season after undergoing surgery on his knee. It is unknown if it’s the same knee that is now causing problems.

The goalkeeper returned to the City squad for the final eight league games of the season, making his Premier League debut for the club in the 5-1 win over Watford last month. Club captain Kasper Schmeichel returned to the goal for the final two games of the season.

Ward had established himself as first choice for Wales, impressing in his performances for the nation in Euro 2020. He now however has a fight on his hands to keep that starting place for the winter World Cup in Qatar later this year.
