Transfer possible as Leicester City left with three options after first significant exit

Leicester City saw the first movement in their senior squad on Friday when the departure of third-choice goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic was announced as part of the retained list.

The 37-year-old had not made a single senior appearance for four years, and so his exit is not going to leave a huge hole in the City squad, albeit he was a very well-liked member of the team and goalkeeping unit. But he will still need replacing in some capacity.

That City chose to let him go suggests they do have a plan, although whether a contract offer would have been accepted by Jakupovic is not certain anyway, with the veteran keeper understood to be eyeing a move to America. Here’s a look at what the club may have in store.

It would not be difficult for City to immediately improve the quality of their goalkeeping unit. Daniel Iversen returns this summer from yet another loan spell in which he became a fan favourite at his adopted home. He won player of the season at Preston thanks to his first-rate shot-stopping ability, and he has been in the senior Denmark squad this month.

Based on those performances at North End, he is ready to step up to the next level. He would be a high-quality, hassle-free replacement for Jakupovic and he would allow City to turn their focus back to other matters.

But that would also seem a waste. Based on his trajectory, it does not feel right to hold Iversen back and ask him to be third choice for the club. For City's progression, it would be a smarter move to loan him out again and maybe bring him back next summer, when he could compete with Danny Ward for the number one spot with Kasper Schmeichel’s contract up. He could also be sold while his stock is high to generate funds for other business.
