Scarlets swept aside by champions Bordeaux on chastening night

Scarlets were taught a lesson as they slipped to a second defeat in as many games in the European Champions Cup, going down 50-21 to Bordeaux at Stade Chaban-Delmas.

After taking an early lead, Scarlets were pinned back by four quickfire tries from the hosts, including a double from Matthieu Jalibert.

The visitors responded just before the break, but a comeback never really felt plausible, despite Fletcher Anderson completing a brace, as the hosts added four more to their tally in an impressive performance.

The result leaves Scarlets second bottom in Pool 4, with one point from their opening two games.

After being edged out by Bristol Bears in their opening game, head coach Dwayne Peel was keen to see a positive reaction from his side.

And, just nine minutes in, he arguably got it, as Anderson went over for a surprise early score.

But the French giants were level nearly immediately after the restart, with Jalibert latching on to his own kick to gather and cross the whitewash.

It was the opening salvo of a 10-minute triple blitz from the hosts, who took the lead just three minutes later as Jefferson Poirot found a gap in the Scarlets defence to go over.

Gaetan Barlot added another on 20 minutes following a ruthless driving maul from the line out.

Jalibert then added his second of the night courtesy of a devastating counter to make sure of the bonus point, as the Scarlets struggled to cope.

However, Peel's side did pull back another try before half-time, with Henry Thomas crashing over just after half an hour.

But any hopes of a comeback were severely tempered a few minutes later as Tiaan Jacobs crossed the line.
