Sander Berge could give Man United what Erik ten Hag has always wanted - but on one condition

With just three weeks to go until the transfer window closes, Manchester United's search for a midfielder is ongoing.

After wrapping up the signings of Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro last month, United have stepped up their search for a holding midfielder in recent weeks. The latest name they have reportedly set eyes on is Burnley's Sander Berge.

The Norwegian arrived in England from Belgian side Genk in January 2020, joining Sheffield United for a fee in the region of £22million. After three-and-a-half years at Bramall Lane, he made the switch to Burnley.

However, he could do nothing to stop the Clarets from sealing an immediate return to the Championship. The Turf Moor outfit won just five league games all season.

On the face of it, few people would have envisioned United attempting to solve their midfield search by dipping into the Championship. However, Berge has demonstrated that he is not a Championship player and that he is capable of making his mark at the highest level.

The 26-year-old has racked up 66 Premier League appearances in his career and he has made his mark, even if his attacking statistics suggest otherwise. Berge is not a player who gets supporters out of their seats all that often, but he will regularly earn applause for his actions in the centre of the pitch.

He is a strong competitor in ground duels, and his ability to progress the ball up the pitch is arguably his biggest strength. He will rarely venture into advanced positions in and around the penalty area, but he does perform the role of a shuttle between defence and attack.
