Manchester United's £77m transfers mean they are two deals away from what Erik ten Hag wants

As one new face arrived at Carrington, another was saying an emotional goodbye. Manuel Ugarte has had eyes only for Manchester United throughout this summer window, but to make room for his arrival United had to end a relationship that has sustained for 22 years.

Scott McTominay is now 27 but since he was five Manchester United is all he has known when it comes to club football. Perhaps reaching 253 club appearances and having the kind of career he has had so far says more about his mentality than his ability.

While a galaxy of expensive recruits have flopped under Old Trafford's harsh spotlight, McTominay has proven himself to be at times invaluable to a succession of managers. The fact Jose Mourinho took such a shine to him has made more sense as his career has gone on and the Scotland international wrung every last drop out of his talent to sustain his status at United.

Even now, his departure is partly being forced by the Premier League's spending rules, which incentivise selling academy graduates. That made Napoli's £25m bid appealing when United were looking to raise funds to sign Ugarte for an initial £42.3m.

The time might be right for McTominay to move on, however. He had an excellent season last term, but can't be guaranteed minutes in a competitive area of the team under Erik ten Hag. At 27, a search for more regular first-team football makes sense.

McTominay's exit sees another familiar face heading for the exit, however, and as Ten Hag nears the end of his third transfer window the transformation of his squad is almost complete. As
