Sam Williams future latest after revealing interest from Super League clubs

Canberra Raiders half-back Sam Williams seems unlikely to make a mid-season switch to Super League as things stand. Williams was released by the NRL club on Wednesday after struggling to command a regular place in the Raiders' side.

He subsequently said in an interview that he had received interest from clubs in Super League about a move, but only one clubs has quota space to accommodate Williams if he were to move mid-season as things stand: Warrington Wolves.

Rugby League Live has been told the Wolves have no interest in Williams at present, closing what could well be his only door on a move to Super League this summer. There is the possibility of other clubs moving on overseas players to facilitate a switch for Williams but at present, that seems unlikely.

Williams' management have been offering his services to clubs in Super League and the Championship for a number of weeks. Rugby League Live has been told that includes his former club, Wakefield Trinity, but Trinity are content with their half-back pairing of Jacob Miller and Mason Lino for the remainder of the season.

There is also another significant obstacle blocking Williams moving to Super League immediately - the game-time he has been receiving in Australia. He featured 12 times in 25 games for the Raiders last year and has not played in 2022.

That means he is way below the 50 per cent threshold of games required to secure a working visa and the only option to bypass that is to offer a player a significant salary in excess of £100,000.
