Sam Lammers leaves Rangers woe in the dust as he earns lofty Utrecht 'danger' acclaim from impressed pundit
Sam Lammers is turning heads back in Holland as the Rangers loanee is named in one former Dutch international's team of the week.
Michael Beale brought the attack-minded star to Ibrox in the summer from Atalanta but he struggled in his first six months in blue. He netted just twice with two assists in 31 games, and he has been shipped out on loan by new gaffer Philippe Clement. At new club Utrecht, Lammers has starteed brightly and his assist in a 1-1 draw with PSV has landed him a mention from former Utrecht star Ferdi Vierklau.
Twice-capped by the Netherlands and having played over 100 games for Utrecht in the 90s, he believes time abroad is aiding Lammers upon a return to the division he has experience in from time at Heerenveen and PSV. He told De Telegraaf when explaining why Lammers was in his best XI: "It's good that he tried it abroad, but it's just as good that he's back now.
"Of course he will still lack some rhythm, but he was already involved in almost every danger and provided the assist for Boussaid's equalizer. You immediately saw how he keeps an overview in such situations."
Lammers was far from happy with referee Joey Kooij's performance. A tussle with André Ramalho had the Rangers loanee held with two hands but nothing was given near the opposition's box, sparking disgruntlement.
He told SoccerNews: “I felt like I turned away and he grabbed me with both hands. Kooij said it came from both sides, but I have no idea how that is possible.
"I was already heading towards the goal. Why should I hold him?. I feel like that was a mistake. That's how the whole stadium thought about it.”
