Sam Lammers insists Rangers fan flak was logical as he reveals 'night and day' change in Ibrox vibe
The negativity coursing down on Rangers’ summer signings in the final throes of Michael Beale’s reign could have sapped the energy from even the hardest of competitors.
But for Sam Lammers, caught right in the eye of the storm after his £3.5m move from Atalanta, there was no chance he was going to be worn out by the flak. Not when he understood it was perfectly normal - logical even - at a club the size of Rangers. The laid-back Dutchman says he simply switched off from the bad vibes and switched on to finding the solution to the team’s troubles.
It’s incredible to think only six weeks have passed since a 3-1 home defeat to Aberdeen put the lights out on Beale’s tenure and, for all it seemed at the time, Rangers’ season too. In terms of the mood shift in Govan it might as well have been a lifetime ago. Fast forward to the present - and just six games under new boss Philippe Clement - and the difference in the energy flowing round Ibrox is, as Lammers puts it, “night and day”.
Where the atmosphere against Aberdeen on September 30 was toxic the punters were at their electrifying best to help their side over the line against Sparta Prague on Thursday. It’s a synergy that works both ways. And, according to Lammers, that positivity is now driving Clement’s side in their charge for success.
Asked about the criticism of himself and fellow new signings including Cyriel Dessers, Lammers said: “Yeah, this is normal in a club like this. We had some bad results. It is not the first time. It is logical that fans are getting impatient and they search for explanations. To be honest, I didn’t see much of it. But for me it is normal that the fans are not happy when we don’t get results.
“But now it is night and day. I feel the energy
