'Sad to see him go' - Hull City supporters reluctantly understanding of Tom Eaves contract decision

Hull City supporters have reluctantly accepted that the club are making a sensible decision to not extend Tom Eaves’ contract. Hull Live broke the news on Tuesday that the 30-year-old will be released after three years at the MKM Stadium.

He is the second of the fans’ favourites to be leaving the Tigers after it was also confirmed that Tom Huddlestone will not be part of the squad heading into the summer and next season. Like with the veteran midfielder though, it has widely been received as the correct decision as City look to move away from being a club fighting at the bottom of the table.

Under the stewardship of Acun Ilicali, the vision is to ultimately work back towards the Premier League and, unfortunately, Eaves isn’t the profile of striker to help on that journey. Although, he did still have a useful impact in the frontline this season as he scored five Championship goals and provided three assists in 31 games.

Those important contributions made it 18 goals and nine assists in 108 appearances for City, a solid return for a striker signed on a free transfer from Gillingham in 2019. The decision to release Eaves was confirmed on Wednesday afternoon.

City also confirmed the departure of midfielder Richie Smallwood, while they took up one-year options on George Honeyman, Matt Ingram, Callum Elder, Mallik Wilksand Josh Emmanuel. Before that though, they reacted to the news of Eaves’ impending departure.
