Harvey Cartwright knows his Hull City challenge as new appointment provides further boost

Hull City were blessed this season with three every good goalkeepers in Matt Ingram, Nathan Baxter and youngster Harvey Cartwright, all of whom played a part in keeping the Tigers in the Championship this season. Cartwright, who has this week penned a new four-year deal at the MKM Stadium, admits working with his two teammates has been a real help this season.

The 20-year-old made his league debut off the bench against QPR in February after Ingram collided with Albert Adomah and needed to be checked over in hospital, before being handed a first start three days later in the 2-0 home defeat to Barnsley.

Though talk of a loan move remains firmly on the table for Cartwright, his focus is currently on working with Ingram and whoever comes in to challenge for the number one jersey at City, whether it turns out to be Baxter or somebody else.

"I always learn from any goalkeeper however comes in, whether it's Matty, Nathan or whoever," Cartwright said. "I always try and take bits from each of them, but never too much because I'm my own goalkeeper. I take little bits from everyone and if it works, it works, and if it doesn't, it doesn't, but I just try to be myself.

"You've got to work together and there's only one spot on a matchday, you've always got to support the number one whoever that is, you've got to work for yourself, not just for the goalkeepers' union."

The youngster was also full of praise for teammate Ingram, who answered an SOS from Luton Town to help with their play-off campaign which ultimately came to an end across Yorkshire at Huddersfield Town early last week.
