Ruben Amorim has some simple decisions to make ahead of Athletic Bilbao vs Manchester United
Manchester United rested some key players from the start in their defeat to Wolves on Sunday but Ruben Amorim will need to be careful when picking his starting XI this weekend ahead of the clash with Athletic Bilbao.
Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire were among those not in the starting XI against Wolves after the dramatic extra time comeback against Lyon. Amorim gave Tyler Fredricson his debut as well handing Harry Amass his first senior start at Old Trafford.
Diogo Dalot, Leny Yoro and Casemiro were also not in the starting line-up after playing 120 minutes against Lyon but they would benefit from a run-out against Bournemouth before they face Athletic Bilbao.
United were the better side against Wolves but they clearly missed some of their star men. United failed to really test Wolves goalkeeper Dan Bentley, only hitting the target on two occasions despite having the majority of possession.
Amorim was left frustrated after the game but was realistic in the work that needs to be done moving forward. “We tell the fans the truth that we lack a lot of things in our team, that we miss chances, and that if we don't score goals, we are not going to win," he said.
"We have a lot to do and to focus on improving the team step by step. Understanding that until the end of the league, it's going to be like this and then we need to do something.
"Of course, we have a plan, and we talk about that every day, but the season is not over, so let's focus on that."
Momentum could be key going into the game against Athletic Bilbao, with the trip to Bournemouth this weekend providing Amorim with an opportunity to get back to winning ways ahead of a massive game.
United have failed to win any of their last three fixtures against Bournemouth
