Ruben Amorim has taken brave Manchester United gamble with three players

"It's not the best moment or the best season to put some kids to play because again they need a strong base to really show what they can do, but in this moment we need to do it," Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim said this month.

United's run to the Europa League final has seen Amorim ring the changes for recent Premier League games. It's led to a downturn in results with the Reds winless in the top flight since beating a dismal Leicester City side in mid-March.

United have managed only one victory against a side not bound for the Championship next season (at Fulham in January) since their dramatic derby comeback success at the Etihad in December.

There's been precious positives to take from a dismal domestic campaign but the green shoots are evident in the academy.

The Reds reached the FA Youth Cup semi-finals, faced Manchester City in the last four of the Premier League 2 play-offs on Friday night, and have produced several first team players this term.

Three have risen to prominence in recent weeks. Chido Obi has been the headline act in the academy this term such has been the interest in the former Arsenal forward since his summer arrival and the sheer volume of goals he has plundered.

He was handed his first Premier League start at Brentford and it was the latest example of just how raw the 17-year-old is. Obi had one half chance against the Bees but he failed to connect with his header, while he fashioned a shot for himself late on which was blocked.

"Chido fought all game but you can feel he’s really naive sometimes in the way he puts his body. He’s going to understand what is the feeling of playing in these kind of games, this is the best way," Amorim said after the game.
