Ruben Amorim has just confirmed the one player Manchester United won't sell this summer
Manchester United are in a tough position financially and Sir Jim Ratcliffe's comments and actions have aligned with that fact.
To put it bluntly, United are in a mess. They need to make huge adjustments to their squad to fit Ruben Amorim's vision but they do not have an unlimited budget to make that happen.
MEN Sport understands the plan to make Amorim's team this summer rests firmly on the ability to sell players. Sadly, United are in a position where they can't just consider selling deadwood to create a budget.
The likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho have both been tipped towards the exit door at Old Trafford. Both are young starlets who represent high sell-on value and you can tell that Amorim would rather keep both men but knows that is not possible.
In January, the Portuguese head coach was coy on Garnacho's future telling reporters before the Argentine ultimately stayed: "I don't know what will happen. Let's focus on the team and the players that we have here.
"We don't know what can happen until the window closes. Anything can happen."
Meanwhile, on Mainoo, he added: "Our idea is always to keep the best players and the players we build for this club. But we know the position the club is in at the moment. We will see."
After such a poor season, it seems only right that the door is open for all players to leave if the offer is right. While some would be more reluctant departures than others, it looked as though all scenarios remained on the table until Wednesday afternoon when Amorim confirmed the one player he would not sell.
