Roy Keane disagrees with Man United supporters over Gareth Southgate amid 'out of order' manager talk

Roy Keane has admitted he wasn't surprised to see Gareth Southgate be heavily linked with replacing Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager this week - but a fellow pundit has called it 'out of order'.

The bookmakers have made Southgate their favourite to succeed Ten Hag at Old Trafford on the back of a report suggesting he is Sir Jim Ratcliffe's preferred candidate for the role.

Southgate will manage England at this summer's European Championship in Germany and he's done an admirable job with the national team, but his last experience in club management was considered a failure and saw Middlesbrough relegated from the Premier League.

The overwhelming majority of United fans have not responded positively to links with Southgate and many were shocked to see him emerge as a potential front-runner. However, Keane wasn't surprised to see the links intensify, as he explained on Stick to Football, produced by Sky Bet: “I could see that happening [Southgate being the next United manager].

"Well, obviously everyone’s thinking he’s probably going to be with England this summer if he has a good Championship, thinking if they could win it.

"And if they don’t, then maybe they’re thinking maybe you’ve ran your race with him. His connection with Dan Ashworth, who he has worked with previously. Yeah, I’m not that surprised with it.”

Gary Neville shared his verdict and said: “I never saw Gareth Southgate as a Manchester United manager, psychologically, I never saw that. I can see it now, now Dan Ashworth has come in.
