Roy Hodgson sends Manchester United advice to Erik ten Hag ahead of Crystal Palace clash

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has advised Erik ten Hag to block out the outside noise surrounding Manchester United ahead of their two teams meeting again in the Premier League this weekend.

Ten Hag's men faced Palace on Tuesday night in the Carabao Cup and walked away comfortable victors thanks to goals from Alejandro Garnacho, Casemiro and Anthony Martial. The result eased some of the pressure on the Dutchman's shoulders after a difficult start to the season which has seen defeats to Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Brighton and Hove Albion and Bayern Munich.

Hodgson is no stranger to the pressures of management having taken the reins at Inter Milan, Liverpool and the England national team in a star-studded career. Ahead of the clash this weekend, the 76-year-old was asked about the best ways to deal with the pressure which comes with managing a club like United.

He responded: "The bigger the club, in terms of the support and the money the club generates and the amount of people who follow it, the pressure gets ramped up, but in fact – certainly Erik would agree with me – that whether you’re at Manchester United or a lower league club in England or Holland, to a certain extent the conundrum remains the same.

"You have to work very hard to prepare your team, you have to try and then live with what the team is doing on the field, and make the improvements that you can. In the meantime you have to accept from the outside there’ll be scrutiny and people telling you that you aren’t doing it the right way.
