Ross Docherty rages over Dundee United shock at Spartans but one positive lingers after 'unacceptable' loss
Ross Docherty admits the only positive from Dundee United’s shock defeat at Spartans is they can still revive their Viaplay Cup ambitions.
Jim Goodwin’s side had been looking to reassure fans that they were in good shape as they attempt to bounce straight back to the Premiership. But the Ainslie Park trip turned into a nightmare as the SPFL new boys won the Group B opener courtesy of Blair Henderson’s early goal. Goodwin, his players and even the club hierarchy all came in for fierce criticism.
But new captain Docherty, who is looking forward to facing old team Patrick Thistle tomorrow, insists they can recover from this embarrassing setback. He said: “The only positive is that it’s early. For us, it’s better happening now. That result is unacceptable for this club but it’s better to happen now when we can put it to bed and still potentially get out of the group.”
Spartans were outstanding in the first half, with Henderson tapping in after 11 minutes following Cammy Russell’s forceful run into the box. Russell himself had two great chances to find the net but failed to capitalise.
United improved after the break but their day was summed up when Tony Watt had his penalty saved by the outstanding Blair Carswell. Spartans keeper Carswell deservedly picked up the man of the match award after pulling off a string of fine saves, particularly to deny Watt and then youngster Rory MacLeod.
He said: “We’ve got the early goal, we’ve hung in and all the boys were great. We’re off the back of a great run which took us to promotion and into League Two, so we’re used to winning. There’s no fear in there, we just go out with a smile and play our game.”
