Rangers have become what was unthinkable in the past but one question hangs over Michael Beale and his men - Kenny Miller
Standing on the 18th fairway at the Renaissance Club a few weeks ago I watched two golfers under pressure.
Vying with each other at the top of the leaderboard, and playing into a hurricane, they had to produce when it really mattered on the last hole. And with a couple of unbelievable shots, Rory McIlroy and Bob McIntyre didn’t disappoint at the Scottish Open. That’s why they’re both superstars of their sport. Because when the heat is on, they deliver.
And on the eve of a new Premiership season, that’s the question mark hanging over Rangers gaffer Michael Beale and his players. At the start of every campaign, Rangers need to win the league. When you’ve won it, then lose the next two when Celtic were supposedly in disarray? You MUST bounce back. This isn’t just about the title now for my old club. It’s about success.
Rangers have won two major trophies in 12 years, which isn’t good enough. That has to be addressed. They have to get back to being serial winners – not just picking up silverware every now and then. Everyone inside Ibrox knows this, the manager included. They’ve become what was unthinkable in the past. Win a league, relax. Win the Scottish Cup, relax.
That’s not Rangers. It’s about being relentless in the pursuit of trophies. You win a prize, you park it and move to the next one. That’s the mentality you need at Ibrox but it’s been missing for far too long and Beale has to get it back. There’s been so much talk about the rebuild from when he came in back in November. OK, so it’s done now. By the end of August, there could be 10 new players in the building. The talking has to stop, it’s time for action.
At least five of his signings must hit the ground running. There’s no time for a settling-in period.
