'Bargain' - Man City fans think club have got one over Manchester United again as Josko Gvardiol fee agreed

Manchester City are closing in on the second signing of the summer transfer window after agreeing a fee with German side RB Leipzig for Josko Gvardiol.

City have targeted Gvardiol all summer, with Leipzig putting a deadline on the transfer to go through before the start of their season in order to give them time to find a replacement. The move is now a step closer to becoming a reality after a fee was agreed.

The 21-year-old will now travel to Manchester for a medical at the end of this week and for terms to be agreed. However, there is no timeframe on whether a deal will be completed before Sunday's Community Shield against Arsenal at Wembley.

Gvardiol will join compatriot Mateo Kovacic as a summer signing, taking City's spending to £103m. It's believed that Gvardiol could play an important role in City's defence for the next ten years.

The fixed €90m (£77.5m) fee for Gvardiol, is below the £80m Manchester United paid for Harry Maguire in 2019, so Gvardiol won't become the world's most expensive defender, despite previous reports to the contrary. There are no add-ons to the deal.

He will join countryman Mateo Kovacic at the Etihad Stadium. The midfielder joined City earlier this summer from Chelsea for an initial £25m transfer fee.

But after the details of how much City will be paying for Gvardiol emerged, City fans have been quick to point out that it is less than what United paid for Maguire four years ago. And taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, City supporters have been revelling in the news.

The Manchester Evening News are producing a special 48-page 2023/24 season preview to look at what the new campaign could hold for Manchester City.
