Riot police 'under attack' by huge crowd as mass disorder erupts on Leeds street with double decker bus and police car set alight

Riot police were seen being attacked by a huge crowd amid scenes of mass disorder and violence in Leeds on Thursday night (July 18).

Horrific videos posted to social media showed a large group of people shouting and hurling various items at officers, who were armed with riot protection gear.

A fire in the middle of the street could also be seen burning away, with a double decker bus also sent into roaring flames amid the chaotic and violent scenes.

Social media was awash with other video footage of the disorder, showing the mass crowds gathering and smashing up windows of police vehicles. People posting about the incident said the police were 'under attack'.

A police inspector urged people to 'stay in their homes' as officers continued to manage the escalating violence late into the evening.

People described the scenes as 'mayhem' and 'a riot' on social media. Clips that surfaced online also showed scooters, pushchairs, bikes and bats being used in the assault on a police car before it was deliberately overturned.

The incident first erupted at around 5pm when police were called to an address on Luxor Street. A 'disturbance' was reported, involving agency workers and children. More people then started to arrive before 'pockets of disorder' began breaking out in the area.

The latest statement from West Yorkshire Police says: "At 5pm today (Thursday), police were called to an ongoing incident at an address in Luxor Street,
