Rio Ferdinand's text message to Virgil van Dijk during Euros stitched up ex-team-mate

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand used Jose Fonte's phone to play a cheeky prank on Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk during the Euros.

Ferdinand invited the former West Ham United and Southampton player onto his podcast, which includes a segment where guests spin a wheel that decides something they must do. On this occasion, Fonte landed on "phone message haha" which gave Ferdinand the opportunity to text anybody on the Portuguese ace's contacts list.

Predictably, Fonte was rather concerned with who Ferdinand may choose, due to the huge number of famous faces in his phone. After contemplating, Ferdinand decided he'd text Van Dijk, who having recently lost to England in the Euro 2024 final, may not have been in the best of moods.

The moment arose during the 'Rio Ferdinand Presents Five' podcast. The ex-defender ominously said after Fonte's spin: "You've got to give me some names who you have got."

While it was suggested that Cristiano Ronaldo might be in Fonte's contacts, the ex-Southampton defender dismissed the idea, saying: "No, don't bother the man." Instead, they settled on Van Dijk; an idea that seemed to worry Fonte as he realised Ferdinand would be pretending to be himself, reports the Mirror.

The Red Devils legend's message said: "Is Rio a better defender than you? Watching some old Premier League games back, Rio was a monster. Was he your idol growing up?"
