Rio Ferdinand praises Andre Onana for doing what he wouldn't have done at Manchester United

Rio Ferdinand praised Andre Onana for showing character after Wednesday's mistake at Bayern Munich and hopes Saturday's clean sheet at Burnley will help his confidence.

Manchester United came away from Turf Moor with a valuable three points thanks to Bruno Fernandes' first-half added-time effort. Erik ten Hag's men were forced to fight hard for their victory against a Clarets side who dominated possession and pushed for an equaliser.

Onana enjoyed a steady night between the posts, saving well from Zeki Amdouni with the score at 0-0 and looking far more dependable when called upon. And Ferdinand hopes it will provide the foundations for defensive improvement.

"I’ve spoken about his character over the past few days since the loss to Bayern Munich and I have to commend him," Ferdinand told TNT Sports of Onana. "When I was playing, I would’ve walked straight past that mic zone and not wanted to talk at times. So that shows his great character.

"But this clean sheet will go a long way to building that character back up, hopefully the first of many more. He can’t do it alone, he needs his teammates to help him out a bit."

After a dismal start to the season, Saturday's trip to Burnley had already turned into a must-win game for United. Ten Hag's side had lost their last three beforehand and were on the verge of crisis.
