Rio Ferdinand names Manchester United's strongest partnership that could impact transfer plans

Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United do not need to sign a first-choice centre-back this summer due to the blossoming relationship between Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

The defensive pair have installed themselves as Erik ten Hag's first-choice duo this season after a string of impressive performances. Harry Maguire started the season alongside Martinez but Varane's form has seen the England international phased out.

Both centre-backs have been out injured, with Varane returning in the 2-0 win over Wolves on Saturday whilst Martinez will be back in pre-season. As a result of their performances, Ferdinand doesn't think United need to sign a new top defender, regardless of any departures, and instead would look for a young prospect the club can develop.

"I think Man United's worst period of the season apart from Brentford and Brighton has been since the two centre-backs have been out," Ferdinand told FIVE.

"That's where they have looked most vulnerable. They have lost control in games and that comes from Martinez, who has control and assuredness in possession. I think the partnership he has started to form with Varane, has started to look like a very solid partnership.

"I don't think he needs to look for a number-one centre-back right now. I'd look for a young one coming through to groom, that's what I'd go for.

"I don't think the priority is to sign a centre-back. The priority is to keep them fit. I would go out and try and sign the best young centre half."
