Rio Ferdinand explains big change Andre Onana will cause at Manchester United

Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United's style of play could change next season after signing Andre Onana.

United have their new number one after completing a deal to buy the Cameroon goalkeeper from Inter Milan. He will replace David de Gea between the sticks at Old Trafford.

Onana is a better stylistic fit for Ten Hag's brand of football and will allow United to play out from defence with more success. As a result, Ferdinand thinks United will look a far different team with Onana, who allows them to play closer to Ten Hag's ideology.

"Ten Hag wants to control every phase and every aspect of the game," Ferdinand told FIVE. "That is how he played before coming to Man United.

"He tried it with De Gea, Maguire, etc and play through the press and pressure. Brentford was a great example, they got caught with the ball and punished.

"He then went away from that. This highlights the braveness, the steeliness, the 'this is my team' attitude from the manager. It doesn't matter how big a player you are or how influential you are in the dressing room, how long you have been here, he will do what's right for him and his team.

"You have to respect that. I think Onana is a great signing, he is a new-age goalkeeper, he epitomises that. He's great with his feet and don't underestimate his ability to be a shot-stopper as well.

"He can dominate in goal, he's a great shot-stopper. It will be interesting to see how he plays and the style of football Man United play this season.
