Reaction from Chatham Town manager Kevin Hake after FA Trophy win against Carlisle United

League glory and cup success were topped by Chatham Town’s win over Carlisle United for manager Kevin Hake.

At a packed Bauvill Stadium on Saturday, Chats pulled off a sensational 1-0 win over a side that sits top of the National League.

Report: Chatham 1 Carlisle 0

Chats took a first-half lead thanks to Matty Macarthur’s precision free-kick and then stood strong against a fired-up Carlisle to keep the visitors at bay.

Hake has overseen promotions and cup wins while manager of Chatham, as they rise through the leagues, and the win over Carlisle was another champagne moment.

“I think it's got to top the lot, if I'm being honest,” said the delighted Chats boss.

“The boys were at it, and we gave a really good account of ourselves against a really decent team.

“I thought it was good value for it. We've gone and beaten a full-time outfit who are top of the National League. That's an unbelievable victory.

“We had done our homework on them, and we knew what they were going to be about. They're a great team.

“You've only got to see the players who started, the players they put on. They're proper players, essentially they're a league club and two years ago they were battling in League 1.

“They have had to go through a bit of an unfortunate time, but they're top of the National League, and I couldn't be more proud of my boys and my backroom team. They got it absolutely spot on.”

Carlisle were restricted to very little in the opening half, but improved after the break, as their manager Mark Hughes turned to the likes of Chris Conn-Clarke to try and get them out of trouble.

Chats stood strong, however, protecting Nathan Harvey’s goal and restricting the visitors to few clear-cut chances.

There were some nerve-jangling moments
