Rasmus Hojlund set Erling Haaland challenge by former Manchester United striker

For Dimitar Berbatov, the decision was a simple one. On the final day of the 2008 transfer window and flush with Abu Dhabi cash, Manchester City tried to hijack his move to Old Trafford.

United had gone through the pain of lengthy negotiations with Daniel Levy to try and reach an agreement that all parties could be happy with, but in a sign of things to come City turned up at the table and had a bid accepted straight away. The choice was now down to the player.

This was the day that City planted their flag in the ground by signing Robinho, but they had finished the previous Premier League season in ninth and it was all a bit of an unknown. United were still that United, under the rule of Sir Alex Ferguson and having just won the Premier League and the Champions League.

When Berbatov was told City had come to the party, he didn't flinch and despite the success the last 15 years have brought to the Etihad, he has never regretted his decision either.

"No, because times were different and my mind was one thing and one thing only; join United. The badge, the players, the history, Sir Alex, that was it," he said.

"I’m coming from a small country and this type of moment happens to us once in a lifetime so I needed to grab it and run with it. That’s what I did, I worked hard go to there and in the end, it paid off in my mind. The only thing I was seeing was red, it was my dream, my mountain, the moment I really made it coming from a small country."
