Rangers to appoint next boss within 48 hours as Ibrox board make decision on Clement or Muscat dilemma

Rangers will appoint their new manager in the next 48 hours.

The Ibrox board have made their final decision on Michael Beale’s successor who will be unveiled this week. The club’s hierarchy were staying tight-lipped on whether Belgian boss Philippe Clement or Aussie gaffer Kevin Muscat was their preferred choice. Former Genk, Club Brugge and Monaco head coach, Clement, has been odds-on favourite for the job.

And Mailsport understands the 49-year-old was still locked in talks with Rangers on Friday afternoon over the position. But Muscat, who will take charge of current side Yokohama Marinos against Urawa Reds in Japan this morning, is also in the running. And sources close to ex-Gers star were last night refusing to confirm whether it would be Muscat’s last game in charge of the J-League outfit.

Beale was sacked by Rangers 13 days ago after a 3-1 Premiership defeat to Aberdeen, which saw them slip seven points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic in the table. Club legend Steven Davis took temporary charge for two games - a 2-1 loss to Aris Limassol in the Europa League and a 3-0 league win over St Mirren.
