Rangers outraged as vile graffiti mocking Ibrox disaster splashed in Hibs end as club vow to identify sick vandals

Rangers chiefs lashed out at the Hibernian fans who vandalised seats at Ibrox with taunts mocking victims of the Ibrox Disaster.

A number of seats in the away end had the number 66 scrawled across them in green paint in a sick reference to the number of fans who lost their lives on Stairway 13 when tragedy struck on January 2, 1971. Shocked Rangers staff also discovered stickers placed on a number of seats after the Premiership clash reading: “Stairwell Thirteen – it’s the greatest sight that I have ever seen.”

IRA graffiti and abuse aimed at the late Queen Elizabeth II was also found, enraging Ibrox bosses. A Rangers spokesperson said: “Rangers condemns in the strongest possible terms the graffiti and stickers left by a section of the Hibernian supporters at Ibrox this afternoon. The Ibrox Disaster remains the darkest day in our club’s history, and continues to affect a number of families to this day.

“The mocking and celebration of such an event is outrageous, and has no place in any football stadium or society as a whole. Rangers will be pleased to work with Hibernian to identify those responsible.”

The Easter Road club were handed an allocation of just under 1000 tickets for the Premiership clash. And the capital club say they are determined to root out those responsible.

A Hibs spokesperson said: “Hibernian FC is aware of the intolerable graffiti and stickers found in the away end at Ibrox today and condemns the behaviour of the individuals that were involved. The club will work with Rangers to identify those responsible and will take the most serious action possible against anyone involved.
