Rangers held in PSV thriller as lightning strikes twice at Ibrox to tee up Champions League shoot out - 5 talking points

Rangers will have to repeat their heroics of a year ago in Eindhoven to reach the Champions League group stage after a pulsating 2-2 draw against PSV.

Just like last August, the first-leg of their play-off tie ended with both sides sharing four goals. Michael Beale’s side led twice through goals from Abadallah Sima and Rabbi Matondo in each half. But they were pegged back by the Dutch outfit, who responded with an Ibrahim Sangare strike and Luuk De Jong’s header.

That means Gers need a victory in Holland next Wednesday if they want to progress to the lucrative group phase. They’ll need a repeat of 12 months ago when Antonio Colak’s goal secured a 1-0 victory and 3-2 aggregate win. PSV enjoyed large chunks of possession at Ibrox but Beale’s men stayed in the game and scored two stunning goals.

Sima produced a rare moment of quality to curl home the opener just before half-time. After Sangare levelled, sub Matondo raced on to a terrific Cyriel Dessers pass to finish for 2-1.

But from a routine corner, PSV Eindhoven skipper De Jong jumped highest to nod past Jack Butland and set up a thrilling second-leg. Rangers could have won it near the end with subs Sam Lammers and Danilo coming close.

Whatever you think of Beale or his recent summer signings, one thing you can’t accuse him of is not knowing how to set up a team. Before this first-leg tie, plenty of people were tipping PSV to run riot with Rangers.

The general feeling was that the Dutch outfit would have too much quality on the ball, even at Ibrox. But tactically, Beale rarely gets it wrong. He proved it a few times against Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic in one-off games last season - and it was evident again last night.
