Rangers can correct £10m transfer misstep with a player who can be Kris Boyd in the Philippe Clement era – Kenny Miller
Rangers missed a big signing opportunity in the summer. They spent around £10million on strikers when there was one just as good right under their nose.
For me, Lawrence Shankland should have been at Ibrox long before now. But six months ago they decided to splash the cash on Cyriel Dessers, Danilo and Sam Lammers instead. In terms of recruitment, and with hindsight, that looks like a mistake. And unfortunately for the money men at the club, rectifying that in January might now be very expensive. With a year left on his contract at Tynecastle, Hearts have the right to price Rangers out of a move for Shankland.
What is it going to cost to get him? That’s the big issue now. But if Shanks is a player Philippe Clement believes might be the difference in a title run-in, it’s worth asking the question. And even if it does take £3m or so, they should do it. Because he’d be a terrific acquisition for Rangers. Although they’re different types of players, going for Shankland would remind me of Kris Boyd’s move from Kilmarnock to Ibrox.
I’ve analysed Lawrence a lot recently and, for me, he’s got everything you’d want in a centre-forward. His all-round game is excellent.
In fact, when I look at Shankland and Bojan Miovski at Aberdeen right now – both are better than anything on show at either Old Firm side. In the last two years Kyogo Furuhashi has been a really good fit for how Celtic played, in terms of his movement, threat and goals. But it hasn’t quite worked for him at Parkhead this season.
Not only is he absent from the top of the scoring charts, he has also found himself out of Brendan Rodgers’ team. Up until now, Shankland and Miovski have been the two best strikers in the league.
And the Hearts man should have been a
