Rangers and Aberdeen FINALLY agree on one thing as bonkers Robbie Winters in goals Final triggers nostalgia trip

Rangers and Aberdeen will battle it out for the first piece of silverware of the season - the first final between the clubs for 23 YEARS.

The fierce Scottish football rivals secured their place at Hampden on December 17 with wins over both halves of the Edinburgh divide in their respective Viaplay Cup semi-final ties at Hampden at the weekend.

Rangers and Aberdeen battled out a trilogy of epic League Cup finals in the late 1980s. The Ibrox side won a penalty shoot-out after the sides shared six goals after extra time in 1987 before the Light Blues won by the odd goal in five the following season but Alex Smith’s Dons made it third time lucky in 1989 thanks to a Paul Mason double with his winner coming in extra time.

They met again in both the League Cup and Scottish Cup finals as Rangers won both as part of their Treble success under Walter Smith in 1992/93, with Aberdeen also finishing runners-up to the Ibrox side in the league.

But they didn’t meet again a final for another seven years - and that remains the last time they clashed in the final. However, there was enough drama in that Scottish Cup final to last the two decades that have passed.

The game will be remembered for Aberdeen STRIKER Robbie Winters having to go between the sticks after just three minutes following an injury to legendary goalkeeper Jim Leighton, who was retiring after the match, after a collision with Rangers frontman Rod Wallace left him with a broken jaw.

An outfield player had never before been forced to pull on the gloves and neither have they since that eventful afternoon. With his oversized goalie top and gloves, Winters was forced to pick the ball out of the net four times as Dick Advocaat’s men secured their fifth trophy out of six under
