Alan Shearer offers Manchester United hope after Fulham win

Alan Shearer doesn't feel Manchester United's weekend win over Fulham makes them an exciting team to watch but accepts three points was the most important thing for the Reds this weekend.

United went into the clash on Saturday having been handed two disappointing defeats against Shearer's former club Newcastle United and Manchester City. Pressure was starting to grow on Erik ten Hag but the victory alleviated some of the weight on his shoulders.

Bruno Fernandes bagged the all important winner for the Reds in the dying seconds to spark jubilant scenes in the away end. Ten Hag's men sit eighth in the table but the gap to the top four has been cut to six points following Arsenal's defeat.

Reflecting on the result, Shearer told The Rest is Football podcast: I think it wasn’t at all about the performance. Everything mattered on the result. You can imagine what it would have been like, even if they had drawn. If it had stayed 0-0, you can just imagine the criticism.

"Everything was about the result for Manchester United, so for them to get that win was huge for them and you never know. It doesn’t automatically make them a good team, I don’t think they are an exciting team to watch. But, you never know in football. One result, attitudes might change, confidence might change, but it was a huge result for them, massive."

Attention for the Reds now turns to the Champions League as they travel to FC Copenhagen on Wednesday night looking to do the double over their Danish opponents. United are third in the group with three points from three games.
