Christopher Jullien claims Celtic should have won the Europa League ALREADY but Rangers show it can be done this season

Christopher Jullien believes Celtic could have won the 2020 Europa League to complete an unprecedented QUADRUPLE.

The former Hoops defender was part of Neil Lennon’s side, who topped their group three years ago by beating Serie A side Lazio home and away. And ahead of Celtic’s return to Rome on Tuesday night in the Champions League, Jullien claims their famous victory at the Stadio Olimpico should have led to them lifting the trophy. Celtic won the domestic Treble under Lennon that year, albeit the Premiership season ended early due to the Covid pandemic.

In Europe, they were eventually knocked out by FC Copenhagen who reached the quarter-finals only to lose to Manchester United. Jullien says that defeat to the Danes was one of the biggest disappointments of his career - because Lennon’s side were good enough to go all the way. Sevilla eventually beat Inter Milan in the August 2020 final, which was played behind closed doors.

But Jullien, now at French side Montpellier, said: “We had such a good Europa League campaign that year - that’s why it was so disappointing to go out against Copenhagen. It was one of the worst nights I had at Celtic because the tournament was there for us.

“I really had the feeling that we could at least make the last four or the final. We could have done something special with that team.

“I’m sure a lot of other teams in Europe thought the same because we’d shown how good we were in the group stage by beating Lazio twice. In the title race in Scotland, we were so far in front - that’s why we were given the trophy in the end.
