Punchless Celtic are punished as fan fury felt by Brendan Rodgers in Kilmarnock slip up - 3 talking points
David Watson headed a stunning injury-time equaliser to earn Kilmarnock a point and deliver a big blow to Celtic’s title hopes.
The Rugby Park kid climbed off the subs bench to nod beyond Joe Hart in the dying seconds and shatter the toiling hosts. Kyogo Furuhashi’s first-half header looked as though it would be enough to see Brendan Rodgers’ men move three points clear in the title race. But the champions failed to put the game to bed after the Japanese hitman’s 14th goal of the campaign and they were punished in severe fashion when Watson grabbed the equaliser.
Watson’s goal spraked Kilmarnock delight and Celtic’s despair. It’s now just one defeat in the last 13 games for Derek McInnes’ side as they keep up their push for a Euro spot. But this was damaging for Celtic. Two more points dropped and more chants of unhappiness from punters at full-time as the door was slung open for Rangers to take a title advantage if they defeat St Johnstone in Perth on Sunday.
It was Watson’s second goal of the season at Celtic Park and, while the previous one didn’t mean much in a 3-1 defeat, this one was massive. Rodgers’ team just didn’t get going, even though had a couple of chances before the opener arrived. Luis Palma wasted a chance after a neat flick from home debutant Adam Idah and Matt O’Riley shot over.
The breakthrough came just after the half-hour when a delightful ball from Anthony Ralston to the far post found Kyogo who had stolen free into space. His beautiful header back across Will Dennis and into the net was textbook and eased the stress around the home fans.
Killie hit back when Danny Armstrong whipped a short corner onto the head of Liam Donnelly, but his powerful header was beaten away by Joe Hart. Callum McGregor
