Police stop and search order covering Manchester extended with man arrested and weapons seized after attack

Heightened police stop-and-search powers implemented across a large area of Manchester after a horror attack will now run into Sunday - with GMP revealing a man has been arrested and weapons seized.

A police cordon was put in place and investigations were continuing today - Saturday - after a man was attacked and suffered serious injuries.

It happened on Haymarket Street, in the Ardwick area of the city, at around 4pm on Friday. GMP brought in stop-and-search powers across a huge area of the city as a result - a zone covering Hulme, Ardwick, Moss Side, Longsight and Gorton. The 'Section 60' order gives officers powers to search anybody within a specified area.

Now police have revealed a man in his 20s has been arrested and a knife and knuckle duster seized. Police swooped overnight to stop a car in Moss Side and the man was held. He was being questioned in custody today.

In a statement on Saturday, GMP said: "We have authorised the extension of stop-and-search powers in the Hulme, Ardwick, Moss Side, Longsight and Gorton areas of Manchester after an incident which occurred at around 4pm on July 5. "Detectives continue to investigate and enquiries are currently ongoing. Section 60 powers under the 1994 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act were put in place yesterday evening and have now been extended
