No-one was arrested on the scene, the force spokesperson added. According to the fire service, the woman driving the car was also taken to hospital.

Pictures taken on Wednesday evening showed a large cordon in place along Oldham Road, with a number of police vehicles at the scene. An air ambulance was sent to the incident and landed on the top floor of the nearby IKEA car park.

One witness said: "I saw the emergency services turning up as I was dropping my daughter off at dance. They were very fast at responding.

"Looking at it, the car and bike was a right mess. It looked like the rider had been thrown from his motorbike."

Another who saw the emergency services arrive at the scene said: "I got off the bus coming from Oldham, I usually walk home from the bus stop via Boodle Street, but it was taped off as there had been an accident.

"I saw the bike damaged on the ground and as I walked to the IKEA side of the road I saw paramedics treating a man laying on the ground. Then heard a helicopter land on top of IKEA."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just after 5.30pm on Wednesday 19 July, firefighters attended a road traffic collision involving one car and one motorbike on Wellington Street, Ashton-Under-Lyne.
