OK, so this Nations League might have been more Tommy Conway than Michael Corleone but getting to the knockout stages would still be an offer we can’t refuse.
Because Scotland can still reach the quarter-finals – despite looking dead and buried after three defeats on the trot. Friday’s win over Croatia at Hampden gives us that chance. Beating Poland, plus a bit of luck from the other A1 group game will propel us there – and make us a Pot 1 team for World Cup qualifying. Capiche?
But we can’t worry about Portugal and Croatia. Certainly Steve Clarke won’t be. His mind will only be on how Scotland perform tonight in Warsaw and his team is on the up all right.
They’ve played some great stuff in this campaign, albeit without the results apart from last week. Will there be more of the same against the Poles tonight?

In some ways, the task for Steve Clarke and Co. tonight is a simple one — win to avoid relegation.
They need to win to jump above Poland and avoid bottom spot in section A1. Otherwise, it's back to league B.
There is plenty else at stake too mind you.
Scotland started the month among the third seeds for the World Cup qualifying draw and victory would likely take them into pot two, or even the heady heights of a pot one spot.
They would need to finish second to do that, and would also qualify for the Nations League quarter-finals in the process.
A rather laclustre campaign could end up being looked upon as a roaring success if tonight goes to plan.
