Plymouth Argyle did not deserve defeat at Fleetwood Town says Steven Schumacher

Steven Schumacher admitted Plymouth Argyle never had enough control of the game as they lost 2-1 to Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium.

The Pilgrims did open the scoring in their second game of the season with a 23rd minute penalty from striker Ryan Hardie after Bali Mumba was fouled by Fleetwood defender Toto Nsiala.

However, Town equalised through Dan Batty soon afterwards and went on to win the game with an 88th minute close range finish from substitute Joe Garner.

Schumacher said: "I thought the performance was average, we played okay. In certain spells in the second half we passed the ball nicely but then didn't have an end product.

"First half, I thought we were a bit too direct. I didn't think we deserved to win the game but I definitely don't think we deserved to lose it either."

Garner struck late on for Fleetwood after Argyle goalkeeper Mike Cooper had parried away a shot from Cian Hayes. The visitors then applied plenty of pressure during eight minutes of added on time as they chased an equaliser.

Defender Macaulay Gillesphey sent one header over the bar as the Pilgrims forced three corners in the closing stages, with Cooper even coming up for one of them.

Schumacher said: "Credit to the lads, they stuck in there. They reacted well to a real poor goal that we conceded and showed some character to try and have a go and get back into the game.

"We threw everything at them, literally everything. One was cleared off the line, it looked like it could have potentially been handball but wasn't given. Unfortunately, we have come away from here again with nothing.

"I don't think we ever had control of the game enough. We know how difficult it is to come here. It's a tight pitch, the grass was really long.
