'We did not read the situation well': Chiefs coach admits back 3 tactic backfired in City defeat

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane says that his charges did not execute the plan in their 2-0 defeat against Cape Town City on Tuesday at Cape Town Stadium.

Zwane opted to start the match with a back three partnership of Zitha Macheke, Njabulo Ngcobo and Siyabonga Ngezana, while Reeve Frosler and Dillan Solomons shifted in as wingbacks to nullify City's midfield.

But Zwane's the tactical switch backfired.

City's Venezuelan forward Darwin Gonzalez gave the home side a lead in the opening five minutes of the DStv Premiership clash as he capitalised on the space that he was given in attacking areas of the field.

The cushioning second goal came midway through the second stanza courtesy of City's Congolese centre back Nathan Fasika as he nailed a headed effort beyond Brandon Petersen's reach in the 62nd minute.

Thereafter, Zwane returned to a back four, but it was little too late for Chiefs to salvage the fixture.

"That was the plan when we analysed them, they got very good players on the ball and we said, 'let's pack the middle' because we also have players who could match them pound for pound," Zwane told reporters.
